BBC Radio 1Xtra is a nationally available digital radio station operated by the BBC, primarily devoted to Black and urban contemporary music. It launched at 18:00 on 16 August 2002, having been referred to as “Network X” during its planning stages. The opening broadcast included an exclusive track featuring DJ Skitz, Rodney P, Beverley Knight, and Blak Twang, presented by the Rampage collective and the then-breakfast host, KC.

The station’s music policy embraces a rich and diverse range of genres—British, North American, Caribbean, and African hip hop, grime, drill, UK garage, drum & bass, funky, house, R&B, soul, reggae, dancehall, soca, afrobeats, amapiano, and more. It aims to spotlight these genres across multiple platforms, ensuring targeted and culturally relevant content.
