BBC Radio 3

BBC Radio 3 - Live

BBC Radio 3 is the BBC’s premier station dedicated to classical music, opera, jazz, world music, drama, and cultural programming. Launched on 30 September 1967, it succeeded the BBC Third Programme, which had been broadcasting since 29 September 1946. This rebranding was part of a broader restructuring of BBC radio services, which also saw the introduction of Radio 1 and Radio 2.

The station’s programming includes live broadcasts of the BBC Proms, performances by BBC orchestras and choirs, and a diverse range of music and spoken-word content. Notable programs have included In Tune, Essential Classics, and Late Junction.

In recent years, BBC Radio 3 has undergone significant changes. In 2025, the station ceased its long-running drama programming, ending nearly 60 years of featuring renowned actors and playwrights. This decision was driven by financial constraints and a shift towards focusing more on music content.
