About BBC Radio Hausa
BBC Radio Hausa is the Hausa-language service of the BBC World Service, primarily serving Hausa-speaking communities in Nigeria, Ghana, Niger, and other parts of West Africa. Launched on 13 March 1957, it was the first African-language service operated by the BBC and remains a significant source of news, information, and entertainment for millions of listeners across the region.
Broadcasting from Broadcasting House in London, with editorial support from the BBC’s bureau in Abuja, Nigeria, BBC Hausa offers a range of programming, including news reports, cultural features, and discussions on various topics relevant to its audience. The service is available via shortwave radio, online streaming, and through collaborations with local radio stations in several African countries.
In December 2024, the BBC reported that the Niger junta suspended BBC Hausa broadcasts for three months, accusing the service of spreading false information about an extremist attack that allegedly resulted in numerous casualties. The suspension highlights the sensitive nature of media operations in regions experiencing political instability.
