About BBC Radio Suffolk
BBC Radio Suffolk is the BBC’s local radio station serving the English county of Suffolk. It commenced broadcasts on 12 April 1990 and is based at Broadcasting House on St Matthews Street in Ipswich. The station offers a mix of local news, talk, sport, and music programming tailored to the communities it serves.
The station broadcasts on FM, DAB, digital TV, and via BBC Sounds. FM frequencies include 95.5 MHz for north-east Suffolk, 95.9 MHz for East Suffolk, 103.9 MHz for Ipswich and south-east Suffolk, and 104.6 MHz for West Suffolk. DAB transmissions began on 7 October 2017 on digital frequency 10C from various transmitters across the county. BBC Radio Suffolk was the penultimate BBC Local Radio station to launch on DAB.
In 2004, Radio Suffolk was named Station of the Year in the Sony Radio Academy Awards. However, significant cuts to BBC Local Radio introduced by Tim Davie during his tenure as Director General of the BBC reduced the content produced in Suffolk to less than a quarter of the station’s output in late Summer 2023.
Local programming is now only produced and broadcast from the BBC’s Ipswich studios from 6 am to 2 pm on weekdays, with no local coverage at all on weekends. There are two exceptions to this: two one-hour sports shows on Mondays and Fridays at 6 pm and live football commentary during Ipswich Town men’s matches.
