About Radio Tyneside
Radio Tyneside is a long-established community and hospital radio station serving Newcastle and Gateshead. Founded in 1951, the station began by broadcasting Newcastle United match commentaries to patients at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). Over the years, it expanded its programming to include music, request shows, and health-focused content, reaching multiple hospitals across the region.
In 2018, Radio Tyneside was awarded a Community Radio Licence, allowing it to broadcast on 93.6 FM to a wider audience while continuing its mission of promoting good health and wellbeing. The station operates 24/7 with the help of dedicated volunteers and has been recognized for its contributions with the Queens Award for Voluntary Service.
