About Signal 1
Signal 1 began broadcasting as part of Signal Radio on 5 September 1983 from Stoke-on-Trent. Originally transmitting on 104.3 MHz and 1170 kHz, it later moved to 102.6 MHz. Over time, additional FM relays were added on 96.4 MHz (Cheshire) and 96.9 MHz (Stafford), though these were reassigned to Greatest Hits Radio in January 2023, leaving 102.6 FM as the main frequency. The station also broadcasts on DAB via the local 12D multiplex.
In 2020, Signal 1 became part of Bauer Media Audio UK and joined the Hits Radio network while keeping its heritage name. In April 2024, Bauer confirmed the station would rebrand as Hits Radio Staffordshire & Cheshire, marking the end of the Signal 1 identity after more than 40 years. By June 2025, all local programming ceased, with only local news and travel remaining while music and shows became fully networked.
